Coach-Mentor (Soccer)

SCOPE
South Bronx United (SBU) is seeking energetic individuals with a passion for youth development and soccer to join our team of SBU Coach-Mentors. In the position, the individual will serve as a mentor and Head Soccer Coach for a travel team of boys or girls within the SBU Academy Program. As a mentor, the individual serves as the first point of contact for any issues regarding SBU student athletes on the team and as a positive influence promoting education, character, and community. As a coach, the individual will run twice-weekly soccer trainings and coach the team at weekend games.  The coach will have the goal of keeping youth active, instilling fun, and helping youth grow as both athletes and students.

This is a part time position from September to June requiring approximately 8-12 hours/week during the fall and spring seasons.  Hours will decrease during the winter off-season (January-February) to 4-6 hours/week.

RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Serve as a Mentor for a team of approximately 20 youth (mentees):

  • Serve as first point of staff level contact for the mentees.

  • Help plan, set, and keep students on their program schedule.

  • Maintain weekly contact with each mentee in person and via phone.

  • Maintain regular contact with mentees’ parent/guardian.

  • Help SBU Education Director monitor student academic performance and assist in the collection of student report cards, transcripts, and school documents.

  • Work with SBU Youth Counselor and Education Director to identify social, emotional, and academic issues or concerns.

  • Check email daily and maintain good communication with SBU office staff

  • Hold a weekly call with SBU office staff to discuss progress of each student-athlete on the team.

  • Schedule one monthly in person meeting with program directors.

  • Complete progress reports for each mentee two times per year.

  • Attend program orientation/training (2 trainings per year)

 2.  Serve as Head Coach a travel youth soccer team

  • Plan and lead training sessions at least two times per week during the season and at least one time per week during the winter.

  • Coach and manage team at games.

  • Coordinate team travel and traveling with students to games and events.

  • Track attendance data from soccer and academic sessions.

  • Attend coach training sessions and coach meetings

  • Communicate effectively with youth regarding soccer and academic events.

  • Enforce attendance and program policies on the soccer field.

  • Work collaboratively with an assistant coach where applicable.

  • Coordinate with the Director of Soccer Programs on all soccer matters

 SCHEDULE

Coach-Mentors must be able to commit to coaching for at least one program year, September – June.  Approximately 8-12 hours per week during the fall/spring season, and fewer hours through the winter.  The precise schedule will be known ahead of each season. Activities include:

  • Two practices per week (generally T/Th or M/W, 6-8pm in fall/spring but may vary)

  • One or two practices per week in the winter (January-February)

  • Weekend games in various locations

  • Weekly phone call with Program Director

  • Occasional team-building events

  • Record keeping (Attendance, etc)

  • Communication with youth and parents

 QUALIFICATIONS

  • Enthusiastic and positive working with you.

  • Experience and passion for working with youth from diverse backgrounds

  • Committed to holistic youth development with a strong knowledge of soccer

  • Previous soccer coaching experience is highly preferred but not a necessity

  • Coaching license is highly preferred

  • Effective in multi-cultural and cross-cultural settings and understanding of individuals of all backgrounds

  • Strong organizational skills and computer fluency.

  • Spanish and/or French fluency is a plus.

COMPENSATION
Coach-Mentors a stipend starting at $5,500 per year (September through June) that increases annually
