College Prep Internship

OVERVIEW
The SBU academy is an after-school youth development academic program that aims to provide student-athletes with a comprehensive pathway from middle school through high school and college, ultimately preparing them for successful careers. The program focuses on academic support, social-emotional learning (SEL), and college and career development, equipping student-athletes with the necessary tools for their future success.

The SBU Academy College Prep Internship is a well-structured opportunity that requires a minimum commitment of 10 hours per week and is designed for those who wish to assist student-athletes in navigating the college application process. Interns are responsible for managing essential documents, offering advice on college selection, aiding in the completion of financial aid applications, and mentoring students in drafting compelling personal statements that reflect their unique experiences and educational goals. This internship is ideal for individuals looking to create a positive educational impact while acquiring and enhancing their academic counseling and support skills.

COMMITMENT
Interns at the SBU Academy are expected to commit to a one-semester term, with the opportunity to continue for additional terms. A minimum of 10 hours per week is required, which consists of approximately five hours providing direct service to youths and another five hours allocated for program planning activities such as curriculum development, grade reviews, and outreach. Though these are the base expectations, interns can work additional hours if desired. Importantly, interns need to be available for at least three days of direct service each week during standard program hours.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Collect and organize crucial documents like tax returns and transcripts to ensure 11th and 12th graders are on track for the college application process.

  • Work with seniors to create a college list matching their GPA requirements, test scores, academic interests, location, social aspects, and financial means.

  • Actively help seniors develop their Personal Statements by guiding them through brainstorming, offering drafting assistance, giving editorial feedback, and providing overall support.

  • Assist seniors in fulfilling application requirements for public city and state colleges and various private schools.

  • Support the financial aid application process by helping seniors with FAFSA, TAP, DREAM applications, and other higher opportunity program applications like HEOP/CD/SEEK.

  • Lend a hand to seniors in their scholarship research and application efforts.

  • Counsel students on their final school selections, factoring in academic alignment, social atmosphere, location, and financial aid packages.

  • Conduct outreach to families and guardians to keep them informed and engaged in the student-athlete's educational progression and decision-making process.

  • Perform data entry tasks in Salesforce to ensure that all information and interactions are accurately recorded and maintained for reporting and tracking purposes.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Current enrolment in or graduation from an undergraduate or graduate program, preferably in education, counseling, social work, or a related field.

  • Exceptional organizational and time-management skills to handle multiple tasks efficiently.

  • Interpersonal skills such as empathy, active listening, cultural awareness and sensitivity, and adaptability are valued. 

  • Proficiency in data entry and management, with a preference for experience using Salesforce or other CRM platforms.

  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion.

  • Passion for working with youth and an understanding of the college admissions process.

  • Flexibility and adaptability in a dynamic, collaborative team environment.

  • Fluent in English and bilingual abilities, especially in Spanish, are a plus due to the diverse population served.

TRAINING
Before working in the classroom, all interns will receive training from our Director of Academic and Post-Secondary Programs and College Access Manager. This will include weekly check-ins with their direct supervisor.
