JOB DESCRIPTION
SOCIAL WORKER - YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
Scope
South Bronx United (SBU) is a sports-based youth development organization that uses soccer as a tool for social change. SBU promotes educational achievement, health and wellness, and character development through activities on and off the soccer field and unite a diverse group of individuals and an incredibly diverse community. Its mission is to prepare youth to succeed in high school, college, careers, their community and beyond. SBU programming provides youth with competitive soccer training and games, educational support, college preparation, character development, and individual case management.
South Bronx United seeks a Youth Development Social Worker to help meet the academic, social, and emotional needs of approximately 120 program youth, ages 10-18. In addition to direct service and guidance counseling, the individual will conduct outreach to the community institutions, schools, and families who also support these youth.
The Youth Development Social Worker will work collaboratively within the overall mission of the organization to impact youth outcomes and organization development.
Responsibilities
The Youth Development Social Worker’s responsibilities will include:
1. Supporting youth in achieving academic and college preparatory outcomes:
Main Activities:
• Instituting program-wide practices for individual goal setting.
• Counseling high school juniors and seniors individually and in groups on college preparations, including building awareness, meeting deadlines, developing applications, researching scholarships, and making college choices.
• Conducting periodic interviews with youth to assess student progress and emerging needs.
• Conduct follow-up interviews with alumni.
• Coordinating collection of youth data, including grades, attendance records, and SAT scores.
2. Providing social and emotional support to help youth develop into civic minded leaders.
Main Activities:
• Planning and conducting workshops to promote character development and conflict resolution.
• Providing individual and group counseling for select youth in need.
• Coordinating behavioral interventions.
• Managing individual cases for program youth.
• Collecting and monitoring quantitative and qualitative data on attendance, behavior, and performance trends.
3. Coordinating SBU youth efforts with participants’ schools and with outside agencies.
Main Activities:
• Managing relationships and facilitating communication with youth’s schools, teachers, and counselors in order to collect student data and communicate regarding youth attendance or other concerns.
• Coordinating referrals for youth and families to outside agencies (including education, mental health, legal services, physical health).
• Building partnerships with community organizations that serve as youth resources.
4. Facilitating family/parent communication and involvement.
Main Activities:
• Communicating with parents and families on issues and activities concerning their children.
• Organizing family-oriented and community-based programs and events as needed (immigration seminar, health/wellness day, clothing/equipment drives).
• Coordinating family education and parent meetings.
5. Collaborating with SBU staff and volunteers.
Main Activities:
• Providing case updates to staff.
• Facilitating or arranging trainings for staff and volunteers on child abuse awareness, anti-violence and anti-gang, and adult-youth communication.
• Developing related programs and services.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
The Youth Development Social Workers should meet the following requirements:
• MSW with at least two years of experience in youth development and/or counseling.
• Experience working closely with youth and families.
• Effective in multi-cultural and cross-cultural settings and understanding of individuals of all backgrounds.
• Strong team and communication skills.
• Strong interpersonal, mediation, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills.
• Ability to work in a fast paced environment and with a young, developing nonprofit organization.
• Flexible and adaptable to work in a variety of settings
• Strong administrative and computer skills.
• Familiarity with the South Bronx community or other neighboring communities is preferred.
• Spanish speaking is preferred. French speaking is a plus.
Time
Full-time, requires some evening and weekend hours. Work hours will coincide with after school program, which ends at 6pm during the school year.

Scope
Fundraising and development support are needed to help the organization keep pace with growing programming needs, and South Bronx United’s Annual Benefit represents a significant percentage of annual fundraising income. Therefore, South Bronx United is seeking a Special Events Director to help expand the 2013 Annual Benefit (last year’s efforts raised $44K+).
Responsibilities
The position's primary responsibilities will be to:
• Lead a team and plan the 3rd Annual SBU Benefit
- to solicit venue, food and beverage donors
- Solicit donations for Silent & Live Auction
- Organize event logistics (catering, registration, recruiting and training volunteers, music, awards program, etc.)
- Manage volunteers (Board, Advisory Board & Benefit Committee) in planning the event and inviting guests
- Compile and code mailing list
- Oversee creating of event materials (save the date, evite, sponsor letters)
- Create financial reports for event and organization leadership using donation software
- Create run of show for event day and evening
- Promote event on social media and with appropriate mainstream media
• Solicit sponsorships for the event and for programs and teams.
• Solicit major donors for campaigns
• Build strategic partnerships
• Support South Bronx United's mission and goals
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
The ideal candidate would have the following qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree (Master’s preferred) in communications, social enterprise, nonprofit management, business, marketing or related fields
• Existing relationships to build upon in relevant fields of business, nonprofit, or sports
• Analytical skills and an ability to thrive in a start-up environment
• 3-5 Years experience in non-profit fundraising events and major gifts
• Excellent communication and writing skills. Samples will be requested
• A passion for event planning and fundraising
• A passion for serving urban youth and education
A successful director will lead the organization’s fundraising event efforts and expand SBU’s funding bases and to ensure that programs and goals are realized.
Time
The workload of the position is expected to fluctuate around key periods, but is flexible for a candidate to work remotely and on their own time. The Special Events Director will collaborate with and report to the Executive Director. He or she will also report periodically to the organization's Board of Directors.
