Football for Equality Day Girls Event, Monday, February 19th

Join South Bronx United, for our fourth annual Football for Equality event on Sunday, February 19th at the SBU Clubhouse! It’s a free event for girls ages 6-18 with skills clinics for younger athletes and an indoor tournament for girls born 2010-2006. Clubhouse Café Opens January 8, 2024

South Bronx United is opening the Clubhouse Café on January 8th, 2024! A social enterprise coffee shop dedicated to providing real-world job training to young adults, the Clubhouse Café is located at 812 River Avenue, just one block from Yankee Stadium, and will be one of the only coffee shops in the Bronx’s Concourse neighborhood. In order to expand its community impact through employment, job training, and an excellent cafe experience, SBU has partnered with local NYC Colombian coffee roaster Devoción. As a certified B-Corp, Devoción’s dedication to supporting the local communities in which they operate aligns perfectly with South Bronx United’s goals for the Clubhouse Café. As part of Devocion’s partnership with South Bronx United, the brand will be providing substantial support including infrastructure, product and training for both full time staff and local youth in training.

South Bronx United’s 2023 Alumni Honoree: Lesley Miron

Lesley Miron was born and raised in the Kingsbridge section of the Bronx to parents who had immigrated from Mexico. She joined the SBU Academy as a 9th grader seeking to pursue her interest in soccer. She quickly grew into a leader in the program. She attended high school at the Academy of Mount Saint Ursula in the Bronx and is a graduate of the SBU Academy Class of 2021. Lesley now attends New York University where she is majoring in social work. Currently, she is serving as a social work intern at South Bronx United giving her the opportunity to give back and serve as a role model for the next generation of youth.

SBU Celebrates 13th Annual Benefit with Midge Purce

South Bronx United celebrated its 13th Anniversary Benefit on November 15th! The program was hosted by Emcee Christian Polanco, of the Cooligans. SBU presented its Soccer for Good Award to NWSL Finals MVP Midge Purce, who had just won the NWSL Championship with NJ/NJ Gotham FC. Honoree Sina Toussi and Alumni Honoree Lesley Miron both gave inspiring remarks, along with Executive Director Andrew So. New York City FC Goalkeeper Matt Freese was also a special guest. The event raised more than $350,000 to support South Bronx United’s programs that provide academic support, college prep, mentoring, immigration legal services, social work supports, and soccer programming for youth and families in the community. It will also serve outstanding coffee from our partners at Devoción. As a local NYC roaster, Devoción has distinguished itself by selling the “freshest coffee” available in the U.S. going from farm-to-cup in as little as 10 days. South Bronx United partners with NJ/NY Gotham FC for Common Goal’s Play Proud Initiative

South Bronx United has partnered with NJ/NY Gotham FC and the club’s official supporters’ group Cloud 9 as participants in Common Goal’s “Play Proud” initiative—an LGBTQ+ and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion educational program. Play Proud will provide participating clubs and organizations with training, resources, and support to help them enhance inclusive policies and practices within their organizations. Play Proud offers a holistic and collective approach to creating inclusive soccer communities with a focus on under-resourced and marginalized populations.

Register for Summer Soccer Camp

Registration is open for our 2023 Summer Soccer Camp. The program is a six-week, half-day summer soccer camp where children have the opportunity to learn soccer and play in a fun, developmental environment. The camp is open to young players of all levels. Parents can register their child(ren) on a week-by-week basis. The first session is a half-week, beginning on Wednesday July 5. Soccer for Social Change: SBU’s 2022 Alumni Honoree Ronny Delgado

Ronny Delgado is South Bronx United’s 2022 Alumni Honoree! We were proud to honor Ronny at our 12th Annual Benefit on November 16. Ronny was raised in Manta, Ecuador, and moved to the Bronx in 2016. The next year, he joined South Bronx United where he benefited from the academic and college prep programming, found a support network, and could pursue his love of soccer. He starred as a defender on both the SBU Boys Under-19 and Men's soccer teams, while showing immense growth and determination in the classroom. South Bronx United Unveils New Clubhouse, Mini-Field

Last week South Bronx United unveiled a new clubhouse, with an indoor mini-pitch and classroom, as they expand their youth development programs that use soccer as a vehicle for social change and help young people in the community grow as leaders and scholars. The new clubhouse, a block south of Yankee Stadium on River Avenue, offers a permanent space available for young people to gather after school, complete homework, play small-sided pickup soccer, benefit from individual tutoring, and attend academic and college prep workshops.

Clubhouse Opening with LeagueApps

On Tuesday, September 21, we celebrated the beginning of a new chapter for SBU, one surely filled with many new possibilities for the community we serve. We could not have done so without the incredible support of the folks at LeagueApps who have helped us to build a home of our own in the South Bronx. The SBU Clubhouse and mini pitch will be a safe place to learn and play and celebrate all that our community accomplishes. We thank LeagueApps, Laureus Sport for Good USA, Hyde and Watson Foundation, M&T Charitable Foundation, and AO Impact for specifically funding this space, as well as all of our supporters who have helped make this dream a reality.
