Youth in the SBU Academy compete on one of seven travel soccer teams. As part of the SBU Academy, youth must attend academic programming at least two times per week, which includes after school tutoring, English and Math instruction, College Prep, and SAT prep. Youth must also attend the Summer Soccer Scholars program, college trips, and other events. The primary goal of is to help South Bronx and immigrant youth graduate high school and attend college.
On the soccer field, teams train two times per week and compete all year round. Boys teams compete in the Cosmopolitan Junior Soccer League (CJSL) and girls teams compete in the Westchester Youth Soccer League (WYSL). Teams are affiliated with the East New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA), US Youth Soccer, and the US Club Soccer. Teams may attend tournaments during the year and every year, one high school team completes a 3-4 day out-of-state trip which includes a soccer tournament, college visits, sightseeing, and character building.
Travel soccer gives South Bronx youth the opportunity to travel outside their neighborhoods, participate in quality soccer training, and compete at a high level. Families/youth contribute an $100 registration fee to cover the entire year. Waivers are available in cases of severe financial hardship.
Parents and youth inquiring about joining the SBU Academy and a travel soccer team must request a tryout on the soccer field, by filling out the Tryout Form. Youth must bring a copy of their most recent school report card and transcript and a copy of their birth certificate or passport to the tryout, as well as a completed SBU Academy Application Form. In addition to the field tryout, students must complete a one month trial period by attending SBU Academy academic programming before officially being placed on a roster.
