Academic Youth Development Program Intern

OVERVIEW
The South Bronx United Academic Youth Development Program interns have an exciting opportunity to collaborate closely with SBU educational staff in coordinating and supervising the SBU Academy. This academy is an afterschool project-based learning after-school program that aims to provide student-athletes with a comprehensive pathway from middle school through high school and college, ultimately preparing them for successful careers. The program focuses on academic support, social-emotional learning (SEL), and college and career development, equipping student-athletes with the necessary tools for their future success.

As an intern, you will work 3-5 days a week, gaining hands-on experience in running a thriving afterschool program. This includes administering educational activities, providing counseling and mentorship to youth participants, as well as developing educational resources. This internship is ideal for individuals seeking practical experience in youth development, education, school counseling, or social work.

COMMITMENT
The work hours for the internship may vary from Monday to Friday. Approx. nine hours of direct service with youth and three hours of program planning support (curriculum, grade reviews, outreach, etc). We kindly request that all candidates commit to at least three direct service days per week. A one-semester commitment is required for this position.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assisting with program coordination: Interns will work closely with the academic staff to coordinate and supervise the SBU Academy. This involves assisting in planning and implementing program activities, ensuring smooth operations, and maintaining effective communication.

  • Supporting academic activities: Interns will have the opportunity to assist in facilitating various educational activities within the afterschool program. This could include helping students with homework, leading small group discussions or study sessions, or providing additional support in specific subjects.

  • Providing social-emotional support and mentorship: As an integral part of the program's SEL component, interns will offer guidance and support to student-athletes. This could involve one-on-one mentoring sessions, group discussions on personal development topics, or helping students navigate challenges they may face academically or personally.

  • Developing educational resources: Interns will have the opportunity to contribute to creating educational materials that align with program objectives and student needs. This could involve designing lesson plans, creating worksheets or handouts, and researching relevant resources for college preparation or career development.

  • Assisting with data collection and evaluation: Interns will play a role in collecting data related to student progress and program outcomes through surveys or assessments. Additionally, you may assist in analyzing this data to evaluate the effectiveness of different interventions or identify areas for improvement.

These responsibilities are meant as a general guide but can be tailored based on the skills and interests and any specific areas interns would like to focus on. At SBU, we want interns to feel comfortable and supported as they contribute to the program's success.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A strong interest in youth development, education, school counseling, or social work. 

  • Experience working with diverse populations of students or volunteering in educational settings is preferred. 

  • Interpersonal skills such as empathy, active listening, cultural awareness and sensitivity, and adaptability are valued. 

  • Creativity and initiative in developing new ideas or resources are encouraged.

  • Flexibility and teamwork are essential for adapting to changing circumstances and collaborating effectively with others.

  • Confidence in facilitating individual and group academic work and lessons

TRAINING
All interns will receive training from our Director of Academic and Post-Secondary Programs and Social Worker prior to working in the classroom. This will include weekly check ins with their direct supervisor.

BENEFITS
While the position is unpaid, interns will have the valuable chance to collaborate directly with experienced educators and a licensed master of social work within an educational setting. Through this hands-on experience, interns will gain practical skills in creating learning resources, classroom management, and supporting students with significant educational and emotional needs. Moreover, interns will be able to develop their understanding of reading and comprehending Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) for students.
