Coach-Mentor and College Recruitment Lead (FT)
SCOPE
South Bronx United Inc. (SBU) is a sports-based youth development organization that uses soccer as a tool for social change. Its mission is to prepare youth to succeed in high school, college, careers, their community and beyond. SBU serves more than 1,800 children, young adults, and families annually through programming on the field and in the classroom. including academic enrichment and tutoring, college prep, mentoring, workforce development, immigration legal services, and other individual and family supports. The majority of youth served are from immigrant families and many were born outside of the country. While the South Bronx has the nation’s highest poverty rate and low educational outcomes, SBU makes a significant difference in the lives of its youth. In the last five years, 100 percent of youth in the organization’s core program, the SBU Academy, have graduated high school, 94 percent have graduated in four years, and 94 percent have gone on to attend college. SBU is seeking energetic individuals with a passion for positive youth development and soccer to join our team as a full time Coach-Mentor. The Coach-Mentor will serve as the head coach of two travel teams (one middle school and one high school-aged) within the SBU Academy, a comprehensive program combining competitive travel soccer with college/career readiness and social emotional learning for 200 youth annually, grades 6-12. This dynamic role combines individual mentorship for student-athletes on your team(s), full team management, and program-wide initiative leadership. Coach-Mentors play a pivotal role in student engagement and positive experience at SBU, contributing to overall program goals of helping young people develop essential life skills to thrive in all areas of their life.
RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Serve as a mentor for student-athletes on two team
Build strong and trusting mentor relationships with student athletes through the effective practice of Positive Youth Development
Oversee student engagement, attendance, and progress in all aspects of SBU
Maintain weekly contact with each student athlete and/or guardian
Maintain regular contact with mentees’ parents/guardians, keeping them updated on all program progress
Support SBU Education Managers in monitoring student academic performance and assist in the collection of student report cards, transcripts, and school documents
Collaborate with Social Work Program Manager and Education Managers to identify social emotional (SEL) progress and challenges of student-athletes
Support the facilitation of weekly academic and SEL programming with your team(s), promoting student engagement and program cohesion
Hold weekly meetings with Academic Managers and Social Worker to individually review each student to develop and implement interventions to support them
2. Manage all aspects of head coach position for competitive travel soccer team(s)
Ensure all soccer activities are infused with elements of Positive Youth Development
Plan and lead engaging training sessions at least two times per week to develop tactical and technical skills among all athletes
Coach and manage team at games, ensuring sportsmanship and positive representation of themselves and SBU
Coordinate team travel and traveling with students to games and events
Track attendance data from soccer training and games
Conducting student-athlete and guardian outreach to keep them updated in advance of all schedules and addressing any attendance concerns
Implement SBU’s Game Eligibility system and other program policies on the soccer field, using cohesive messaging across the whole program
Work collaboratively with an assistant coach when applicable and support the development of new SBU coaches
Manage all team equipment and collaborate with the Director of Soccer and Soccer Operations Coordinator on all logistical matters
3. Lead a program wide College Recruitment initiative with the goal of providing high level support in creating pathways for students/athletes to play at the highest attainable level of college soccer
Create and manage long-term soccer recruitment strategy for high school age student/athletes to aid college application process in collaboration with Director of Soccer, High School Academic Program Manager and College & Career Success Program Manager
Developing, managing, and maintaining relationships with college coaches in New York State plus other relevant schools
Key collaborator in SBU’s Annual City Showcase Tournament to ensure a high quality of competition and exposure to coach colleges
Create and administer lesson plans to interested students/athletes on how to get recruited for college soccer
Provide high level support to identified students/athletes in the entire recruitment process
Help students/athletes develop athlete profiles including highlight videos on relevant external platforms
Manage external partnerships to create additional exposure for students/athletes in showcase tournaments and ID clinics
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Candidates should ideally meet the following requirements:
Commitment to the sport-based youth development model with the ability to balance a competitive approach with helping young people learn and grow
Creativity in infusing team building and social emotional learning into soccer
Experience and passion for soccer coaching youth from diverse backgrounds
Ability to plan and run engaging training sessions that build athlete’s technical and tactical soccer abilities
Knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations
Experience in college coaching or recruiting for college through soccer
Self-awareness and recognition of ways that race and other identities intersect in the work, especially for communities we support
Strong organizational skills, ability to manage a variety of responsibilities
Spanish and/or French fluency is preferred
Applicants with coaching licenses will be prioritized
SCHEDULE
Full Time, exact schedule depends on team assignments.
General hours, 12:00-8:00pm four days per week Monday-Friday, Saturday or Sunday hours around game schedules.
BENEFITS & COMPENSATION
The starting salary for this position is $40,000 - $45,000, commensurate with education and experience.
