College and Career Success Intern

OVERVIEW
The South Bronx United Alumni Service interns have an exciting opportunity to collaborate with SBU’s College Success Coordinator to help coordinate outreach, and create resources for students beginning their first year of college. The SBU Alumni services offers direct services in college and career support for ages 18-24 through individual meetings, our mentorship program, and our workforce development program.  Our services aim to provide our alumni with resources and support for succeeding in life post-graduation, ultimately preparing them for successful careers. Alumni services focus on college and career development and equipping our alumni with the necessary tools for their future success. 

As an intern, you will work 2-3 days a week, gaining hands-on experience in co-creating our alumni resource page and intensive 4-week summer college preparation course for high school seniors entering college. This includes researching job opportunities, creating our alumni monthly newsletter, and coordinating outreach to our larger alumni population. This internship is ideal for individuals seeking practical experience in youth development, communication, or social work.

Spring Internship: early/mid-February - June

COMMITMENT
The work hours for the internship may vary from Monday to Friday, depending on the individual’s schedule. Approx. nine hours of research and project creation and approximately three hours of outreach support and program planning support (research, curriculum planning, outreach, etc) per week.  We kindly request that all candidates commit to two to three days per week. A one-semester commitment is required for this position.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assisting with data collection and evaluation: Interns will play a role in collecting data related to student progress and program outcomes through surveys or assessments. Additionally, you may assist in analyzing this data to evaluate the effectiveness of different programs or identify areas for improvement.

  • Assisting with Workforce Development program coordination: Interns will work closely with the Workforce Development staff to coordinate and supervise the WFD program fellows. This involves assisting in planning and implementing program activities, ensuring smooth operations, and maintaining effective communication.

  • Developing career and college resources: Interns will have the opportunity to contribute to creating career readiness materials that align with program objectives and our alumni needs. This could involve creating planners or a booklet for those entering college, and researching relevant resources for college preparation or career development.

These responsibilities are meant as a general guide but can be tailored based on the skills and interests and any specific areas interns would like to focus on. At SBU, we want interns to feel comfortable and supported as they contribute to the program's success.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A strong interest in youth development, education, school counseling, or social work. 

  • Experience working with diverse populations of students or volunteering in educational settings is preferred. 

  • Interpersonal skills such as empathy, active listening, cultural awareness and sensitivity, and adaptability are valued. 

  • Creativity and initiative in developing new ideas or resources are encouraged.

  • Flexibility and teamwork are essential for adapting to changing circumstances and collaborating effectively with others.

  • Confidence in using digital technology and willingness to learn new skills.

TRAINING
All interns will receive training from our College Success Coordinator prior to working with alumni. This will include weekly check-ins with their direct supervisor.

Through this hands-on experience, interns will gain practical skills in creating job resources, data management, and Nonprofit leadership.
