Girls Leadership Internship
DESCRIPTION
South Bronx United Inc. (SBU) is a sports-based youth development organization that uses soccer as a tool for social change aiming to help youth build character, teamwork, and leadership so they can succeed in high school, college, careers, their community and beyond. SBU serves more than 1,600 young people annually through programming on the field and in the classroom, working to unite a diverse group of students, families, and the South Bronx community toward positive goals. SBU is driven to accomplish our mission and promote the SBU Values of Showing Commitment, Bringing Integrity, and Uniting our Community in all that we do.
SBU is seeking energetic individuals with a passion for positive youth development and soccer to join our team as a part-time paid intern. The intern will implement the Girls Leadership League, an after-school program that combines leadership and soccer skill development. The Girls Leadership League is funded by the Barca Foundation and currently serves about 30 girls from in and around the South Bronx. The next stage of the program is to bring it into schools to reach more girls and build towards a middle school league.
This dynamic role combines mentorship for young girls, coaching, and program management. You will be part of improving the program and planning its sustainability. You will be introduced to curriculum development and grant management. You will also receive training on implementing the Girls Leadership League curriculum.
WHEN
This is a part-time position. General hours are 4-6 pm Monday and Wednesday at SBU’s indoor field. You will also be expected to attend one all-day event per season. The fall season runs September 29 until January 19 (Breaks for Thanksgiving and Winter holidays) and the spring season runs February 23 until June 5th (Break for Spring Break).

RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Assist the Girls Leadership League’s fall and spring sessions
Each season, assistant coach a 90 minute session twice a week for 14 weeks
Attend a training session on the Girls Leadership League curriculum
Help plan and implement two Football for Equality Day events per season
Build strong and trusting mentor relationships with student athletes through the effective practice of Positive Youth Development
Attend weekly check-ins with the Girls Advancement Coordinator to review progress of sites and address any challenges with scheduling, attendance, or implementation
2. Liaise between middle schools and SBU
Send reminders to your sites before every session
Communicate questions and concerns from schools to the Girls Advancement Coordinator
QUALIFICATIONS
Commitment to the sport-based youth development model with the ability to balance a competitive approach with helping young people learn and grow
Creativity in infusing team building and social emotional learning into soccer
Experience and passion for soccer coaching youth from diverse backgrounds
Ability to run engaging training sessions that build athlete’s technical soccer abilities
Self-awareness and recognition of ways that race and other identities intersect in the work, especially for communities we support
Strong organizational skills, ability to manage a variety of responsibilities
Bilingual candidates will be prioritized
COMPENSATION
This contract is from September 2025 until June 2026. Compensation and benefits are as follows:
$18/hour, 4 hours per week (plus 2 all-day events)
Financial support for continuing coach education
