Immigration Services Internship

OVERVIEW
Interns with an interest in immigration law are sought to assist SBU’s Immigration Legal Services Program Manager with immigration-related legal matters. South Bronx United is recognized by the Office of Legal Access Programs (OLAP) at the Department of Justice (DOJ) allowing designated SBU staff to practice immigration law and represent youth, families, and the community in proceedings before Immigration Court and the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). SBU primarily manages immigration cases and provides information sessions on relevant immigrant issues to youth and families in other SBU programs.

COMMITMENT
A minimum of at least 2 days a week for one semester.

TRAINING
All interns will be trained, supervised, and mentored by the Immigration Services Program Manager, a DOJ accredited representative. Interns will have the ability to attend external trainings offered by Immigration Law service providers under the affiliation of South Bronx United.

BENEFITS
While the position is unpaid, interns have the opportunity to get hands on experience under the supervision of staff.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Interns will assist with legal paperwork, record management, client interviews, and with hosting Community Resource Forums and Know Your Rights Workshops.

QUALIFICATIONS
No prior immigration or legal experience required, however, we do ask that you have the following skills and qualifications:
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Detail oriented and strong organizational skills
• Ability to work well independently and with others
• Proficient in Microsoft programs
• Posses or are currently completing a bachelor's or another post-secondary degree
• Commitment to serving low-income immigrants
