The SBU Scholarship

Description
Every graduate of the SBU Academy, who completes an application, will receive a scholarship grant calculated based on their tenure with the SBU Academy, their academic attendance rate, summer program attendance, and team accolades. Additionally, applicants will also be eligible for a discretionary scholarship grant that can increase their total scholarship. Students receiving discretionary scholarship grants will typically receive at least $1,000 and occasionally as high as $2,500. The exact scholarship amounts will be determined based on merit and financial need. Only high school seniors graduating from the SBU Academy are eligible. who will be pursuing a post-secondary 2 or 4-year degree during the next academic year. SBU Academy Alumni who are seeking scholarship funds must complete the SBU Alumni Emergency Scholarship Application.

The scholarship may be applied towards any educational expenses, which may include: tuition and fees, books, supplies, health insurance, or housing. This scholarship is a one-time award but can be spent at any time during the recipient’s college career.

Eligibility
Youth who currently participate in the SBU Academy and will be attending a post-secondary institution (2 or 4-year degree programs) the following year.

Recipients of this discretionary award must commit to (1) attending South Bronx United Alumni events including the January Career Networking event and Summer Workshops, and (2) writing at least one blog article.

In addition to the application form, the following documents must also be submitted:

  • Official High School Transcripts

  • College acceptance or enrollment letter

  • 1 recommendation letter written by someone who is not affiliated with SBU. (You are encouraged to use a recommendation letter that you’ve already submitted for college applications. You do NOT need to get a new letter.)

Application Deadlines
Applications must be submitted in full by Monday, May 1, 2024 to scholarship@southbronxunited.org

The SBU Alumni Emergency Scholarship

Only alumni of South Bronx United’s (SBU) Academy are eligible to apply for this scholarship. The scholarship would provide emergency funding to cover alumnae’s/alumnus’s expenses necessary for the completion of their college degrees. Support can go towards tuition, room and board, commuting or other necessary expenses. Individuals who would be unable to complete college without this additional funding are highly encouraged to apply.

Submission Guidelines
We request that the full application is emailed to scholarship@southbronxunited.org or faxed to (347) 503-0977. If emailing, please do not share a Google document. Please send as an attachment.

If you do not receive a confirmation of the email within 48 hours, you can call (718) 404-9281 to confirm receipt.

We do not need hard copies of the application, but if you wish to send additional information, you may address it to:

Deadline
The Scholarship Committee accepts applications on a rolling basis.
