Shaira Polanco
College & Career Success Program Director
Shaira Polanco began her journey in community service in 2018, when she joined SBU as a College Prep Mentor. During that same period she also embarked on a role as a Job Developer at the Center for Employment Opportunities in the Bronx. Here, Shaira engaged with young adults aged 18 to 24, guiding them towards sustainable full-time employment opportunities.
In 2020, Shaira transitioned her focus to education, recognizing the profound impact it could have on shaping the future of young individuals. She assumed the position of Manager of Educational Initiative at Girls Educational and Mentoring Services (GEMS), where she provided invaluable support and guidance to young women, empowering them to pursue higher education and fulfill their academic aspirations. In 2024, Shaira decided to return to SBU, where she continues the work she is so passionate about.
Beyond her professional endeavors, Shaira remains deeply committed to serving her community in the South Bronx. She is driven by a belief in the transformative power of education and the importance of providing access to opportunities for all young adults. Through her tireless efforts and compassionate leadership, Shaira continues to inspire positive change and foster a brighter future for the next generation.
