Social Work Internship

OVERVIEW
South Bronx United Social Work Interns work closely with SBU’s Youth Development Counselor in providing support for the SBU Academic Programs. The programs provide homework help, academic enrichment, and youth development activities for approximately 80 youth in 5th-9th grade and college prep for 60 students in 10-12th grade. Interns work 3-5 days a week during after school hours (after 3:30) and get hands-on experience supporting underserved youth via individual counseling, supporting youth group activities, managing behavior, and conducting outreach. The social work internship is ideal for undergraduate or graduate students interested in pursuing a career in direct service work with youth and families.

Spring Internship: mid/late January – May

COMMITMENT
A minimum of 3 days a week for one semester. Internship hours generally coincide with academic program hours: Mentoring, 3:30-6 pm, M-F & College Prep, 6-8 pm, M, W.

TRAINING
All interns will be trained, supervised, and mentored by a licensed Mental Health Counselor.

BENEFITS
While the position is unpaid, interns have the opportunity to get hands on experience under the supervision of SBU's Youth Development Counselor in working with underserved populations.

RESPONSIBILITIES
All SBU interns assist in the three major program areas. The intern will focus primarily on the emotional support and youth development facets of the after school tutoring program.

Counseling
• Assist in providing direct counseling to youth
• Co-support the development and implementation of gender-based group activities for youth
• Help to resolve conflicts between youth and manage inappropriate behavior through daily behavior progress reports
• Provide one-on-one mentoring to youth
• Assist in speaking with students, parents/guardians, and/or schools with respect to student behavior
• Conduct outreach to families regarding student attendance on a case-by-case basis

Education
• Provide tutoring to youth within the program
• Support staff with classroom management
• Manage student behavior in a tutoring classroom

Administration
• Track academic records and group attendance
• Track behavioral incidents

QUALIFICATIONS
Enthusiastic and caring with a specific interest in social work, counseling, and youth empowerment. Should have a background in working with youth. Social work, psychology, sociology, or related majors are preferred. No soccer background necessary.
