Summer Soccer Scholars - ENL, Math and/or ELA Instructor

SCOPE
South Bronx United's mission is to use soccer as a vehicle for social change, helping youth build character, teamwork, and leadership skills so that they can succeed in high school, college, careers, their community and beyond. South Bronx serves 1,400 boys and girls, ages 4 through 19, each year by combining soccer with academic enrichment, college prep, mentoring, leadership development, health and wellness, and legal and support services for immigrant youth. SBU is seeking dynamic educators who can effectively engage students through high interest content during our Summer Soccer Scholars Program. Summer Soccer Scholars is a five-week program for 80 middle and high school students combining soccer, academics, and life skills to keep youth active and learning during the summer months. Instructors will serve as lead teachers during the academic portion of the program and will be supported by SBU staff and summer interns. Applicants must be able to attend training and commit to the full summer schedule.

POSITION IN DETAL
Summer instructors will be responsible for teaching five-week academic enrichment courses to classes of middle or high school youth. Curriculum spans approximately 16 hours of instruction, in one hour classes daily, Monday-Thursday, across the five weeks. Math and ELA instructors will receive unit guidance and targeted Common Core standards for their specific grade level and subject.  Instructors are expected to design engaging and fun lessons, activities, and assessments for the course in collaboration with the SBU’s Director of Academic Programs. Instructors will teach two or three one-hour classes daily with a teaching assistant. Class sizes range from 12-18 students.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Summer instructors will be responsible for teaching a 5-week academic enrichment course in our elective program, South Bronx University - Beyond the Limits: Building Resilience and Achieving Your Goals, to classes of middle or high school youth. Math and ELA instructors will receive a unit outline and targeted Common Core standards for their specific grade level and subject. Instructors are expected to design the lessons, activities, and assessments for the course in collaboration with the Education Director. Instructors will teach two or three one-hour classes with a teaching assistant to 10-15 students. SBU will also consider generalist instructors to support the instruction of existing summer curricula.

QUALIFICATIONS
South Bronx United is looking for a highly motivated, energetic teacher who wants to make a difference in the lives of South Bronx youth.Math instructors should have prior teaching experience, preferably in middle school math,  geometry, or algebra. ELA instructors should have experience in teaching middle or high school reading and writing. Teachers should have experience teaching students between ages of 11 and 19, preferably in the Bronx or other inn-city settings. Experience in curriculum development, lesson planning, and differentiated instruction is preferred. Instructors should have strong classroom management skills and be able to work effectively with assistant teachers. A masters or bachelors degree in an education related field is strongly preferred. No soccer background necessary.

SCHEDULE
Training: Monday - Wednesday, July 1-3rd, 9:00am-2:30pm. All instructors will be oriented and supervised by the Director of Academic Programs. Instructors will attend a three-day orientation before the program begins. Additional training and supervision will be provided by SBU’s Middle and High School Program managers.
Program: Monday-Thursday, 8:30 am-12:30 pm; July 8th -August 8th

LOCATION
Near the Mott Haven Educational Campus, 730 Concourse Village West, Bronx, NY

COMPENSATION
$2,500-$3,000, depending on number of courses taught, paid in two installments throughout the summer.
