Summer Soccer Scholars: Teaching Internship
OVERVIEW
Summer Soccer Scholar Interns will serve as assistant teachers in the SBU Soccer Scholars program which combines soccer and education to keep youth active and learning during the summer months. South Bronx United uses soccer as a vehicle for social change, promoting educational achievement, health and wellness, and character development through activities on and off the soccer field and uniting a diverse group of individuals and an incredibly diverse community toward common positive goals.
WHEN
Intern training:
Week 1 :June 27th -June 30th, 9:00am - 1:00pm
Week 2: July 5th - July 8th, 9:00am - 1:00pm
Program Dates:
July 11th - August 12th
Monday-Thursday, 8:30am-3:30pm; Friday, 8:30am-5:00pm

TRAINING
All interns will be trained, supervised, and mentored by the SBU Education Director. All interns will attend a two-week crash-course in teaching covering the basics of lesson plan development, curriculum building, and classroom management. Additional training and supervision will be provided by SBU’s Executive Director, a career educator and teaching consultant.
BENEFITS
This internship is UNPAID. A transportation stipend will be offered to offset subway fare costs. Interns will have the unique opportunity to gain classroom experience, helping developing curriculum and lessons, in a supervised setting. Throughout the summer, interns will receive in-class support and formal observations.
POSITION DETAILS
Summer interns will directly serve youth ages 11-19 in a mentoring and teaching capacity. The interns will be assigned as the mentor for a specific grade-level cohort. They will serve as assistant teachers, to professional educators, for their cohort through three, one-hour class periods each day; Math, ELA, and Life Skills (Computer Science. Entrepreneurship, Journalism, etc.). Interns will have the chance to plan curriculum for and facilitate a high interest, morning elective class as well as community building activities throughout the summer. Interns interested, will gain teaching experience under the supervision of experienced teachers and will be encouraged to take on additional responsibilities of interest in designing the curriculum, lessons, and assessments for the course. All interns will work closely with the Education Directors to become effective educators and caring adult mentors.
QUALIFICATIONS
Enthusiastic and caring with a specific interest in education or youth development. Math or English teaching interns should have a strong background in the respective subject, preferably through tutoring or even teaching the subject. Interns should have a experience working with youth (ideally with students between the ages of 11 and 19). Teaching and classroom management experience is a plus but not a requirement. This internship is ideal for graduate education students looking for classroom experience or undergraduate education students considering a career in education. No soccer background necessary.
