Workforce Development Program

Overview
The Workforce Development Program is a free 6-month career readiness program for participants aged 16-24 who are looking to gain job experience and succeed in entering the workforce. Throughout the program, participants will gain employment skills, create finalized resumes, gain interview skills and leave the program with an understanding of how to be successful in the workforce.

Participants must commit to attend weekly workshops, generally held from 5pm-7pm, and complete training within their employment pathway. Participants choose either the Cafe Fellowship or Coaching Corps pathways, which include part-time employment during the program duration either at the Clubhouse Cafe or as coaching staff. They work approximately 5-15 hours per week. Throughout the program, participants develop career readiness skills and gain employment tools through the career readiness training workshops. Staff works with interested participants to gain a job by three months after the program's completion

Eligibility
The program is open to young adults ages 16-24. Preference is given to applicants who have not previously been employed or who show a particular interest in coaching, mentoring, customer service, or barista. Preference is also given to applicants who are part of or are alumni of South Bronx United programs, including the SBU Academy, the Global Youth League, and the Recreational Soccer Program. Participants must be able to commit to weekly workshops and part-time employment

Two Pathways

  1. Cafe Fellowship: The Clubhouse Cafe is one of the two worksites. At the Cafe, participants work as baristas, salespersons, and cashiers. Throughout the program, each participant will attend barista training with Devocion coffee and on-site training with the Cafe Manager. Each person will leave the program having completed extensive barista training learning coffee creations such as lattes, cappuccinos, espresso, as well as matcha lattes and teas. Fellows also build customer service skills and have the opportunity to earn their Food Protection Certificate

This position is ideal for participants who are older (ages 18-24), want to work in the food or hospitality industry and love coffee or tea. The cafe hours are 7am-6pm during the weekdays and 8am-5pm during the weekend. Participants with more availability during these hours are preferred.

  2. Coaching Corps: Coaching Corps members serve as assistant coaches for SBU programming, including summer soccer camps, weekend recreational soccer, after-school programs, and indoor classes. Throughout the six months coaches are trained by the Community Soccer Programs Manager and also receive a US Soccer Coaching License up to the Grassroots level with opportunities to reach the D level. Coaches will leave the program with group management skills, experience working with children, and increased confidence in their coaching abilities.

Candidates must be familiar with soccer and have an interest in working with children. Those with experience on the field are preferred.
