Workforce Development Program

Overview
The Workforce Development Program is a free 6-month career readiness program for SBU participants to succeed in entering the workforce.

SBU’s Workforce Development Program is a six-month career readiness program for SBU participants ages 16-24 who are looking to gain job experience. Participants are employed part-time at SBU while working either at the Clubhouse Cafe or as coaching staff and work 5-25 hours per week. Throughout the program, participants develop career readiness skills and gain employment tools through the bi-weekly career readiness training workshops.

This program is most ideal for those who are looking for a first job experience or are beginning to enter the workforce.

Throughout the program participants will gain employability skills, create  finalized resumes, gain interview skills and leave the program with an understanding of how to be successful in entering the workforce. Participants will be placed in a  job by three months after the program's completion

Eligibility
The program is open to SBU participants ages 16-24 who are part of  SBU’s rec, academy, or are SBU alumni. Participants must be able to attend the weekly career readiness workshops Mondays 5:30-7pm and work part time July 1st - Mid-December 5-25 hours per week

Two Pathways

  1. The Clubhouse Cafe is one of the two worksites where participants can be placed. At the Cafe, participants work as baristas, salespersons, and cashiers. Throughout the program, each participant will attend barista training with Devocion coffee and on-site training with the Cafe Manager. Each person will leave the program having completed extensive barista training learning coffee creations such as lattes, cappuccinos, espresso, as well as matcha lattes and teas. Fellows also build customer service skills, and receive their Food Handlers License

This position is ideal for participants who are older (ages 18-24), want to work in the hospitality industry and love coffee. The cafe hours are 7am-5pm during the weekdays, participants that are not in school during the week are preferred to fill these hours. However, it is still an option for those in high school.

  2. Coaching Corps is an already established SBU program that trains SBU participants as assistant coaches for SBU summer soccer camps, afterschool programs and indoor classes. Throughout the 6 months coaches are trained by the Community Soccer Programs Manager and also receive their Coaching License. Coaches will leave the program with group management skills, experience working with children, and increased confidence in their coaching abilities.

This position is more ideal for participants who are younger or in high school and those who are involved in SBU either as part of the academy, alumni or rec. Candidates that are interested in working with children, and have more experience on the field are preferred.
